“Hobo Camp” Trash Pickup

posted in: Trail Work | 0

Today community volunteers removed hundreds of pounds of trash from an old campsite on Shortoff Mountain. Back before that area became wilderness, people would drive up Shortoff to dig shrubbery, some setting up camps. One such “camp” is located a few hundred feet from the MST near the northern end of the mountain. At one time, the “camp” was accessible by a dirt road that came up the east side of the mountain. When the shrubbery diggers left, they left behind a metal shack (which fell apart sometime between 1998 and 2005, judging by satellite imagery), a car battery, a 50 gallon barrel full of saw blades, a homemade wood stove, a heavy metal cooking grate, and a bunch of smaller trash.
