Marshall Weatherman’s map project branched off from the LinvilleGorge.net map project in 2008, though data has been shared between the two projects since.  As with the LinvilleGorge.net map, Marshall’s map includes both official and unofficial trails, and also many points of interest such as campsites and water sources.  In 2011 the dataset was modified in collaboration with Bob Underwood to feature a particular 39-mile loop hike, and to remove emphasis from trails considered to be erosive.

This map is available for free download in the following formats:

The Grand Loop route is basically the only giant loop hike available in the gorge, and Marshall’s effort to portray it is clearly monumental.  Other’s have discussed this basic loop but with slight modifications.  Wigg Faulkner has presented a 52-mile hike which is the Grand Loop plus a tour of the Henson Creek area and a number of side hikes to rim trailheads for logistical reasons.  Phil Phelan has published a detailed handbook about the same basic loop, but trims it to 33 miles by cutting off some of the northeast quadrant.

We’re grateful to Marshall for his efforts and his generosity in sharing his project with the community.
