A Ton of Rock Work

Crews have been stockpiling rock since May 25, and today work began on a retaining wall to staunch the terrible erosion at the intersection of the Babel Tower Trail and Linville Gorge Trail.  In many places, top soil and up to two or three feet of mineral soil have been trampled to dust by hikers and washed away by the rain.  As this site’s popularity shows no signs of abating, rock is being used to corral traffic and hold the hillside.

Rock work is difficult but rewarding.  Today’s wall foundation stone alone weighed half a ton, and it took the whole crew to put it in place.  What a great team!
