Volunteers carried out a seriously heavy hunk of iron abandoned in the days before wilderness designation. The piece was a flywheel from a steam powered lumber mill. The story goes that Linville Falls was protected from development when Marion Wright strategically took John D. Rockefeller for a picnic within view of the falls yet also within earshot of encroaching lumber mills.
